August at BionicBrew: Double the size and double the crowd

We’ve expanded.

Double the size and double the crowd. Progress.

In just three days we demolished the place next door and combined the two spaces to open it up a bit and prepare to finally start brewing on site. New lights, new bar, lots of new art and finally a toilet, but there’s still lots to do. In September we’re going to focus on setting up the brewhouse so we can brew at the taproom.

A lot of new faces have been coming in recently so thanks to all those who keep on coming back and bringing your friends along. We know it’s hard to find and you pretty much have to be lead by the hand to find the right door.

New Hours

Friday & Saturday 19:00-02:00 Sunday 17:00-22:00

So far it seems Shenzheners get a late start on their drinking and the bar is pretty dead until about 7 or 8pm. So, we decided to change the hours around a bit. The bar opens a bit later but also stays open later. Remember not to piss off the neighbors and stay inside the taproom after midnight and keep the doors closed. If you walk over to Rose Cafe for some food or a smoke please bring the glasses back.

We need your help. Support us online and get our beer super cheap + beaucoup swag.

We built a new website to spread the word about what we do, where we do it, and how you can help us do more of it.

In the spirit of DIY we built our own Crowdfunding platform so we can sell you what you really want (beer) and to keep the 8% that Kickstarter keeps for themselves. If you need a map how to get here, want to learn more about us or our beer, or if you just want to get some beer at a lower price you should visit the site.

It’s not done yet and there’s a lot to add to the FAQ but if you’re living in Shenzhen for at least a few months it’s well worth it because this is the best deal you’ve ever seen on craft beer in all of China.

Shenzhen Craft Beer Fest

The details will come out next month but we wanted to go ahead and make an announcement to our friends that BionicBrew is throwing the Inaugural Shenzhen Craft Beer Festival. It will take place November 7 & 8 from Friday evening to all day Saturday. Location TBD.

There are other beer festivals in Shenzhen but this one is different. To start, there will only be locally brewed beer from Guangdong and beyond, but no imports. We’re inviting some friends from outside Shenzhen to come and let us taste what they’ve been brewing. There will also be food from local businesses and musicians from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and we count on you to help us spread the word. If you’re a food vendor, a brewer, or just want to get involved, let’s speak at bionicbrew@gmail.com.

KanKan Movie Club

We’re hosting the KanKan movie club twice in September, on the 11th and 25th (both Thursdays). You can signup and join the event here. Not only will you get a bit of culture in your life but you’ll also get discounted prices on our beer! Also, if you have an event that needs a space just ask by sending an email to bionicbrew@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can accommodate.

BionicBrew at Wine & Cheese Shenzhen

Last Saturday BionicBrew sponsored the monthly Wine & Cheese [and Beer] event by Shenzhen Party. It was great to mingle among new faces, Shenzhen’s expats, guests and locals. Amazed at the variety of great French cheeses and wines, we’ll be back again.

Thanks for those who came by BionicBrew after the event for more and see you soon!

BionicBrew now open in Baishizhou, Shenzhen

Opening in Baishizhou

Imported ingredients. Imported experience. Made in Shenzhen.

Last month we told you we would be opening in late June in Shekou. Well, this is China and things change pretty fast. Due to local laws and landlords we weren’t able to get the location we expected to have as a permanent tap room, but we may still open it for a month in late summer as a pop up shop. Instead, we’re opening a small brewery right in the heart of Baishizhou near Windows of the World subway station Exit C. If you know where Rose Cafe is, then you know how to find us already. We’re right across the street down the alley.

We’ve just signed the lease and expect to start renovations next week. It’s very likely that we won’t be finished renovating for at least a few weeks, maybe months depending how expensive it is, but we’ll make sure to open the doors as soon as possible even if that means drinking in very austere conditions. It’s all about the beer anyways, right?

Over the last month we’ve brewed enough beer at borrowed facilities from friends to last us through July and we hope to start brewing in our new home in August.

Startup Grind Shenzhen

A couple weeks ago we were at the Generator v1.2 conference at Shenzhen university and Joe found himself chatting about beer and entrepreneurship with Yan Yan the Chapter Director for Startup Grind Shenzhen. It didn’t take long for Yan to ask us if we’d like to come to Startup Grind in June and put some beer on the table for the crowd. Hell yes!

On July 6th we’ll be pouring beers at Startup Grind Shenzhen for more than 200 entrepreneurs, artists, designers, hustlers, and hackers. We’re very happy to be involved with Startup Grind Shenzhen and also quite impressed at this month’s speaker.

The guest speaker is Lie Guo, founder of the hottest app in China: MYOtee脸. The event is already sold out online, but there may be some tickets left at the door. Either way, we should be set up outside pouring beers at a discounted rate so if you can’t get in at least you can drink some beers and try to crash the networking party later.

HK Brew Craft – a hops run to Hong Kong

Last weekend it was decided we needed to make some of our Bionic Pale Ale and Wild Yin & Yang Wheat beers for the upcoming Startup Grind Shenzhen. Originally we didn’t have a brew space but then Hoss from Pearl River Craft Brewing allowed us to take over the top floor of his personal brewery. Thanks Hoss! Fortunately he had some ingredients on hand but not the special hops we need to make these beers taste the way we like. So we did what every Shenzhener does when they need something of high quality. Head to Hong Kong!

Before making the trip we contacted Chris from HK Brew Craft (HKBC) in Central HK to make sure they had all of the five different types of hops we wanted to use for these beers. Unfortunately they only had three but we were able to calculate some hop substitutions and get a similar beer to what we wanted. We were able to buy enough to make the beer but due to limited supplies we were rationed quite a bit, so in order to make this beer again we’ll need to resupply soon (if you’re going to HK and can carry some stuff back please let us know). However, since HKBC had such an amazing selection of craft singles to buy on site it won’t take too much arm pulling to get us across the water again.

After finishing an early workday on Friday, Joe raced down to Shekou Port in a bus driven by the Chinese cousin of Michael Shumacher (at least the bus driver attempted to drive like him), bought a ferry ticket, and waited. He had the pleasure of making some new friends along the way from Raleigh, NC, USA, and they chatted the entire way. (Thanks Francisco for the beer!)

Chris from HKBC had everything packaged, labeled, and boxed upon arrival so the only thing left for Joe to do was sit in this nice, air conditioned beer mecca and drink a few brews while waiting for a friend to get off work and meet up at Blackstar bar.

Blackstar was a pretty decent spot and the fact that they had Young Master Ale on tap at happy hour make it a definite place to stop in again. The bar is in Sheung Wan without much signage but easy to spot by the heaps of HK-type suits being rowdy near the entrance. A definitely good spot for booze, food, and people watching.

To finish off the night Joe stopped by Azure bar in Lan Kwai Fong with his friend Moodie Younis to crash an architect party for free booze and food before catching a subway back to Luo hu in Shenzhen and then a long taxi back to Shekou. It was a long day and a bit of a pain lugging 10kg of hops, grains, and other goodies around HK and Shenzhen but well worth it. The Pale Ale was brewed 24 hours later and now we’ve got a stellar Bionic Pale Ale on the way.
